Ba-Le Whole Grain Corn Puffs

Here’s yet another delicious offering from Ba-Le Sandwich & Bakery ( labeled here as Bale Bakehouse) in the form of Whole Grain Corn Puffs. If “corn puff” sounds familiar, think Cheetos, except in this case, much more crispy on the outside, yet still light and delicate, with – instead of a salty, cheesy coating – a rather more healthy mix of Sesame, Sunflower, Flax and Sesame Seeds. Balancing off those robust seeds is a subtle butter, brown sugar and salt coating that ties the entire little morsel together perfectly.

Zooming in even closer, you can see the both literally and figuratively healthy coating of flax, sesame, sunflower and pumpkin seeds coating the corn puffs…

If the health benefits of the seeds alone generously coating these corn puffs aren’t enough to convince you this is good stuff, the first taste of one will.

They’re light and fluffy inside…

and crunchy-crispy outside…

with just enough buttery brown sugar sweetness coating it, without making you feel like you need to brush your teeth or check your blood pressure after every “session” eating them. Which it indeed becomes a “grinding session”, as, at least for me, I can’t resist eating less than a minimum of a handful at a time.

Ingredients: Corn Meal, Brown Rice, Brown Sugar, Oats, Butter, Honey, Seed Mix (Sesame, Flax, Sunflower, Pumpkin), Wheat Bran, Salt, Vanilla.
Other features or notes: Made on equipment that processes: Nuts, Eggs, Coconut, Mango. All natural with no preservatives. Hand-made in Hawaii.
Big Shaka to: Light and fluffy texture inside, crispy outside. Lightly sweet, with a mild salt balance to it. Robust, yet balanced nutty coating. Overall, it comes across as very different and “exotic” if you will. Addictingly-ono (<if that makes any sense in context). Owner of company representing Hawaii for Small Business Person of the Year in 2002 by the SBA. Made in Hawaii.
No shaka to: Ba-Le Sandwich shops not consistent in what they carry from the bakery mothership.

  1. Pomai, It looked like a snack I saw sold in Beijing shops. Cost about .50 that size container. Enjoyed pumpkin juices there not Harry Potter kind but not bad.

  2. Someone just gave a me a container of it, its very good. No too sweet, light, and crunchy. It is like eating dry cereal. Good Choice! i also love Ba Le french rolls, i toast it in the oven and make sandwiches ..ono!

  3. Bev, I like to heat my Banh Mi french rolls too, but to the point where they’re toasted, as I prefer the “meat” of the bread to still be soft and supple when eating it as sandwich. They could make for a great toasted french bread though, with plenty of garlic ‘n herb butter smothered on it. Yum.

    Tiabla, I didn’t know they had Corn Puffs with just Flax Seeds on it. Does it have a more distinctive flavor than the other seeds? I’ve never eating Flax seeds by itself.

    Kristin, yeah, this is certainly a snack most kids would dig. It’s kinda’ like a snack chip and candy all rolled into one, albeit much healthier for them as a bonus!

    Betty, wow 50 cents. Still, considering how delicious they are, for the amount in this container, $3.50 is still reasonable, IMO.
